ANIMATION GUIDES

MAX'S GORILLA SCHOOL OF ANIMATION
Basic 2D animation skills in drawing, photoshop and after effects ... create your own moving characters in a few short simple steps

SIMPLE GUIDE TO LIPSYNCING TO A MUSIC TRACK
NOTE: The mouth shapes used are just quickly drawn approximation - create your own unique styles and look...

In photoshop, in addition to a basic head and face structure, each different mouth or eye position can be created as a separate layer which can be turned off and on to get the right facial expression. This layered photoshop file can then be opened in after effects and layers turned on/off when required to get the right motion to fit the audio. [see above link to MAX'S GORILLA SCHOOL OF ANIMATION for more details when creating photoshop/after effects projects]

TOP TIPS

1. Don't try and hit every shape - just hit a rhythm

Simple face construction and eyes blinking
Lipsync 01

2. Use as few mouth positions as possible - i suggest the main alternating between aargh and eee with mmm on closed postions and sprinkle the others in just to break it up and add attitude. If the mouth is moving too fast, although correct, it is annoying. [Think south park]

Create mouth shapes to match different types of sounds
Lipsync 02

3. I advise (for breaths/pauses) - use a blink. Blinks have a 5 frame duration (1 up, 3 down, 1 up)

The overall feeling can be altered without changing the mouth shape by changing other aspects of the face e.g. closing the eyes
Lipsync 03

4. Add other shapes as a new layer where required

The photoshop file with all layers switched on
Lipsync 04

5. don't get bogged down in details - just go for feeling

Hi Im Dan today will be showing you how to begin your way into the Stop-motion animation world with some beginners tips and show some how to start from a novice.

First thing you need is a small tripod and a digital camera or a film camera that can shoot stills.

just a few things before we start need a old toy or figure that has moving arms and head. use this to practice your stop motion by moving the arms and head around to grasp a feeling of how the stop motion proscess works. Move the arms and head small movements about a couple of milimeters per shot.

Just do what you think will work practice makes perfect. once you have done your quick animations your ready to see what its like ull need some edit software or you can use the link in the Edit academy. up load all your pictuers.

Animation runs at 25 frames per second in animation terms every 25 pictuers is 1 second of film time. Right now you have your pictuers up loaded into your edit software they should be named in order and set up automaticly. now all you need to do is go to Actions if your using JUMPCUT or set all image durations onto 0.02 and apply to all now all you gotta do is press play an see it in action!

just rember to keep your camera on a sturdy surface an area where it carnt be moved so the animation dosent look jumpy I have done some example animations with a very bad tripod. It has a nice effect but you dont want all your animations to turn out like this. also be paitent I know you will be shooting 100's of photos but remeber to wait for the shot before moving it I have done an example of impatient shooting wonder if you can spot it. Set the camera to close up shots if ur doing a close up animation of your subject or you'll get blury pictuers.

Once you feel confident your ready to go onto the Bigger stuff try using enamiate objects give them life and a persanlity. This animation is quite simple just think how people react with each other.

Example: person gets hit ether
- A he herts
- B he gets angrey
- C may try to hit them back

Think of the how your gonna animate it by thinking how people would react. You can use absolutely anything in this type of animtion pens, paper clips, mugs anything goes long as it fits your animation.
